Release 5 - August 2010New look Health Maps Wales. Enhanced functionality with members area giving access to custom reporting tools, keyword search facility and colour mapping. National Community Child Health (NCCHD) immunisation indicators updated for 2009/10; NCCHD births data updated for 2009. New theme, Substance Misuse including alcohol-related deaths. A rural and urban classification of Wales has been added which can be viewed on a map or used to filter data to compare areas with same degree of rurality. Release 4 - January 2010Birth and Death registration data, and Cancer incidence data has been updated to include 2008 data. Existing indicators can now be viewed at the new Welsh Local Health Board Areas of Residence created as part of NHS reforms (Oct 2009). Release 3 - October 2009Dental and oral health indicators supplied by the Welsh Oral Health Information Unit (WOHIU) have been added to Health Maps Wales in addition to 2008/09 data updates for hospital admission data and child health indicators. Release 2 - May 2009This release includes data from new datasets such as the National Community Child Health Database (NCCHD) as well as the Annual Birth and Death Extracts. Further functionality such as correlation plots for certain indicators has been added and a "Find my area" search; the look and design of the tool has also very much improved. New indicators include birth and baby information such as maternal age, breastfeeding and immunisation uptake rates; mortality rates for broad categories of disease; the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD 2008) and population density at a lower layer super output area (LSOA). In order to maximise the amount of data available at these lower geographic levels, rates and counts for certain indicators are only shown at aggregated 2 or 3-year ranges, thus avoiding the issue of small numbers. The method for calculating confidence intervals around all European standardised rates (EASRs) has been changed in this edition for both new and previous indicators using an alternative method proposed by Dobson et al (1991)*. This means that the figures for confidence intervals for previously published figures may differ slightly in this edition. The method has changed towards using the Dobson method for all age-standardised rates, as recommended by the Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO) and outlined in this technical briefing. Release 1 - January 2009The first release of Health Maps Wales (January 2009) concentrated on data relating to hospital admissions from the Patient Episode Database for Wales (PEDW) along with cancer incidence data from the Welsh Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit (WCISU). Indicators included hospital admission rates, waiting times for common procedures, length of hospital stay and cancer incidence rates from 2001 to 2008/09. *Dobson AJ, Kuulasmaa K, Eberle E, Scherer J.
