Annual PEDW Data Tables

Release date for 2015/16 data: Wednesday 11th January 2017

The annual PEDW data tables are now available via the document search below. They consist of:
  • Headline figures relating to hospital admissions (inpatient, day case and maternity admissions) in Portable Document Format (PDF).
  • Microsoft Excel tables containing separate analyses by diagnosis, operation, specialty, Healthcare Resource Group (HRG), hospital provider (NHS Trust prior to Oct 2009, Local Health board of treatment thereafter), Local Health Board (LHB) of patient's usual residence and regular attendance information.
  • New for 2015/16 (Publication Date 11th January 2017):
    • Key facts data summary added to each headlines report
    • Knee replacement procedure figures added to the headlines report procedure and diagnosis table (Headlines report page 3)
    • Sepsis diagnosis figures added to the headlines report procedure and diagnosis table (Headlines report page 3)
    • Admitted Patient Care (PEDW) Data Quality Status Report Updated

Key Facts1 - All Welsh Providers 2015/16:

  • There were 942,400 Finished Consultant Episodes (FCEs) recorded, an increase of 3.0% on 2014/15.
  • Of these, 776,800 were admission episodes (the first in a spell), a 2.5% rise (19,200) on the previous year. Maternity admissions made up 54.3% of this rise with 80,500 recorded, an increase of 10,400 admissions (14.9%) on the previous year (this is thought to be down to Assessment Unit activity in some Health Boards – see Notes and definitions for further information).
  • 46.3% of all admissions were emergencies (359,700) compared to 356,300 in 2014/15, an increase of 1.0%.
  • 302,500 admissions were from waiting lists (including booked admissions), an increase of 2.6% on the previous year.
  • There were 686,900 (72.9%) ordinary inpatient episodes and 247,600 (26.3%) day cases. Mothers using delivery facilities only made up the other 0.8% of all episodes.
  • 51.1% of all episodes (92.6% of day case episodes) involved some form of procedure or intervention.
  • There were 30,100 delivery episodes, a decrease of 0.4% from the previous year.
  • 1.4% of admissions (10,800) were from patients not normally resident within Wales, an increase of 2.3% on the previous year.
