NHS Wales Informatics Service Information Services

Information Services Division

The NHS Wales Informatics Service's Information Services Division (ISD) is responsible for the collection, management, and analysis of data held in a number of national databases, and the production and distribution of information derived from these databases. Specialist staff in the unit also provide advice in the fields of data standards and clinical coding.

We manage and maintain some of the main NHS Wales national databases including those for secondary care, child health, births, deaths and the NHS Wales Administrative Register. The unit provides information services to support the requirements of NHS, Government and other Public Bodies, Researchers and the General Public.

The major services provided by us are:

  • Data collection, development and management in respect of NHS Wales national databases including those of Admitted Patient Care (APC) and Outpatient Attendance dataset
  • The NHS Wales Administrative Register
  • The National Community Child Health Database for Wales
  • The management of database servers to support the requirements of the Welsh National Public Health Service and the Business Services Centre
  • The provision of Data Standards and Clinical Coding expertise for NHS Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government
  • The provision of statistical and analytical expertise to enable the provision of information to respond to regular and ad hoc requests in the form of static tables, pivot tables, and interactive web based services
